The Morning After

After all that intense music and dancing last night, i'm definitely in the mood for some more mellow vibes this morning.

Blacks and Blues - Bobbi Humphrey

Thanks to everyone for coming out last night. We all had a blast and it was a good birthday party for Varghese.

The muppets can dance, can you?

Dwine says he wants house music. Is the 432 crowd ready for it? I personally think so. At the last couple parties i've used the latter portion of the night to "test" records that i don't get to play at a lot of other gigs, including house music and various other types of dance music. These have been those moments where people stayed on the dancefloor until after 4am.

Up until now our parties have definitely had a hip hop focus, and i never want to completely get away from that. But we do want the party to represent good music from all genres.

Dwine's video posting of a House music band reminded me to post up a video of one of the hottest current disco bands based out of Brooklyn named Escort. They've really been doing their thing and this is a cool video featuring the Muppets. Check it out and look to hear sounds like this at 432 parties in the near future:

Shaun Escoffery

Shaun Escoffery - Days Like This

I keep saying I'm gonna convince someone to spin a house set at one of these things. Here's a little inspiration.

On this day 19 years ago, high on PCP and brandishing a shotgun, James Brown interrupts an insurance seminar next door to his business office in Augusta, Georgia and accuses the attendees of using his private restroom. The resulting 90-minute interstate pursuit ends only after police shoot out his truck tires. The Godfather of Soul ends up serving two years in prison.

Downtown Community Television - Open House 9/19

This isn't a 432 Promotions event, but i have a lot of connections at this agency PLUS i'm DJing the after party, so i thought that that was worthy enough for a blog posting.

Anyway - all NYC area based film and video heads should come through and check out the DCTV Open House on Wednesday 9/19. Details are here. They'll have presentations, workshops, equipment tests, plus free food and drinks to go along with it. After 9pm i'll be hitting the decks and we'll turn it into a party.

Just don't party too hard because you'll have to save some energy for Retreat Lounge the next day and Uncle Mings the next week (see our event links up top).

Venue:
DCTV
87 Lafayette St. (b/w walker and white) in Manhattan.

PS - I met my wife at one of their events. There might be magic in the air for you too.

PPS - Those dj hands in the flyer are not mine.

Video spotlight

A lot of people are complaining about the state of hip hop these days (myself included), but there IS good hip hop music being made. You just have to look for it.

Below are two videos that my boy Theo worked on (check his name in the credits!). These are just two examples of some good hip hop joints that have come out in the past few months. Check them out and then go buy the albums.

DJ Jazzy Jeff "Brand New Funk 2k7" ft. Peedi Peedi

Marco Polo "Nostalgia" featuring Masta Ace.

I was actually at the video shoot for the Marco Polo song (and was supposed to be in it with my son), but it was taking wayyyyy too long so i had to leave. Either way it's still a great video.

Throwback mix

I dug up a mix i did back in the summer of 05, which at that point was one of my favorite recorded "practice mixes" yet. It ended up being used as a demo for a few places and was right around the time that i organized a party at the now closed Star 64/Starfoods. Due to the nature of the business, the owner of the bar probably never listened to the mix - he was more concerned with numbers of people and how much they spent - but i still associate it with that time anyway.

I'll post up a new mix sometime soon, i swear.
