Not so Free Burger Alert

EDIT: I just tried to go again today and the free burger thing is no longer in effect. I guess they realized they were losing too much money with their coupons all over the internet. Either way, it's still a good burger and if you're looking to PAY for one somewhere, this is a good spot.

I hope some of you were able to get them while they were free.

Here’s the abridged version of the Triple Crown story:

Triple Crown bar in Williamsburg has been plagued with sound issues due to neighbor complaints since we opened our doors on August 6, 2004. Due to an overwhelming amount of police and task force visits and fines we decided to shut our doors and sell the business. We are on our second buyer and for the second time the community board has voted against the sale of the bar despite complaints about noise. We have reached a deadlock situation since we cannot open without receiving fines and we have another 6 years (with a 5 year option) left on our lease but no money left to run the business. All of the owners work elsewhere to pay our own rent and the rent of the bar because the community board and police have bullied us to close with the exception of a sporadic event or two. The few neighbors who complain and the non elected community board voters are spitefully pushing Triple Crown out of business. It of course was never our intention to upset anyone and now after putting, an additional $40k into reconfiguring the sound/soundproofing and our own wedding gift money just to pay bills, we just want out. The New York City Department of Small Business Services have recommended we have a petition ready to give to the state liquor authority. This event is to get people out to sign a petition in support of Triple Crown and our character as owners of this business. Please come out and show your support to us as we only opened Triple Crown as a venue for good music in the city. Community Board 1, CAN WE LIVE?!

We will be there doing what we do best, we’ve received a great amount of support from our family and friends and we have some pretty great things to raffle off, things to eat and drink and of course DJs and good music.

And then here’s the long one, full-on pity extravaganza:

I am a small-business owner in Williamsburg, I co-own a bar called Triple Crown with two other young men, Kit Tipley and Michael Pappalardo. The bar was our joint dream and first hopeful business venture, into which we collectively invested all of our own hard-earned money into. Sadly, however, our dreams and vision for our bar have gone awry, due to conflicts with our local community board with whom we seem to be in a deadlock for resolution. To appease everyone and save ourselves from total financial demise, we have decided to close shop and sell the business. The community board, however, refuses to allow us to sell the space and seems to discourage potential buyers from continuing with its purchase. I am writing to entreat you to please help us by stopping by the bar on Sunday to sign the petition, so that we can all get on with our lives and bring an end to any more conflicts.

The sound issues with Triple Crown led to us spend an additional $40,000 to improve the sound issues by; hiring a sound engineer to set the sound system so that all of the adjacent apartments were under the decibel level that the DEP has set as the legal limit, installed additional quiet rock to the walls of the bar, offered to put all of the neighbors in the adjacent apartments in hotels while quiet rock was installed in their individual units (this offer was declined), replaced the entire sound system with a new quieter system with a limiter that DJs could not touch, hired a door man to keep smoking patrons quiet and away from the property. We even closed the business every day except for Wednesday – Saturday to try to minimize the amount of nights that we made noise. For a while that seemed to appease the neighbors, but even then that wasn’t enough.

We found our first buyer fall 2006, a reputable businessman who owns a few other local businesses. He wanted to open a quiet cafĂ©/bar. The sale of the bar and the transfer of the liquor license had to be approved by the community board and we attended the meeting to see the outcome of the vote. To our surprise one woman (who doesn’t live in the community but whose father lives next door to the bar) had rallied up a petition and a large number of people in the neighborhood to fight against the sale of the bar. They even made up “no Triple Crown” t-shirts. Before CB1 could even vote on the sale that night, the buyer— who was very afraid of making these people angry at him due to his other businesses in the neighborhood—pulled out of the sale publicly in the middle of the meeting.

We found another buyer December 2007 and the same thing is happening again. We have been in contract and everything else has been approved for over 8 months. CB1 met Wednesday 10/10 to vote on this point and 7 voted no and 6 voted yes the others did not vote at all. They said they would possibly re-vote next month if the new buyer agrees to certain terms. On September 28, 2007 there was a story in the Williamsburg Courier about this issue. They interviewed a member of the community board and she openly admitted that they want to drive us out of business out of spite. She admitted to knowing that the first buyers have good reputations but because of the bar’s loud “hip hop music” and us being unwilling to quiet down his association with us made the sale “dubious.” They have known about this pending sale for months now and if they had any terms for this new buyer they most certainly could have made them clear before this month’s meeting. This was a cleanly run business by very honest people who stand to lose EVERYTHING. It’s not a matter of starting over if the bar doesn’t get sold; it’s a matter of digging ourselves out of a massive hole due to this harassment from the community.

The bar is now closed with the exception of one or two nights a month to help pay the rent. The rest of the rent is coming out of our own pockets, we are all working double shifts to make this happen and after 8 months of this and our wedding in August we are barely making it. I am just confused as to how denying the sale and driving us out of business and setting us back years financially is the answer to a noisy bar issue. If they were unhappy with the noise then it would seem that they would approve of the sale and everyone could move on with their lives. The next possible community board meeting is November 8. We are in need of your assistance before that date. We are having a party at the bar to gather names from the community and friends for the state liquor authority. Please show your support for us and come by on Sunday, October 28th to sign the petition.

Paper Monster

Even though there are only three contributors listed on this blog, it often takes more than the three of us to pull off all of the work that is required from month to month to do what we do. One example of work that goes beyond our scope is the flyers that we use to promote our events.

For example, this month's flyer was designed by an artist who goes by Paper Monster. He normally does stencil and graffiti art, but he decided to take a stab at flyer design this month by using one of his own images and adding the text of the party. The images in this post include that flyer and other examples of his work.

If you like what you see, check him out at http://www.papermonster.org or http://papermonster.wordpress.com/

Run DMC on Reading Rainbow

As a pure coincidence, this post and the one before it both mention something related to rainbows. Strange.

Anyway, onto the program..... Check out this video of Run DMC on Reading Rainbow. It's pretty funny to see Levar Burton talking about Run DMC for some reason. The rap about books is also pretty excellent.

I'm doing an 80s themed party on Saturday, and i think i'll definitely have to do a Run DMC set. After all, We're approaching the 5th anniversary of Jam Master Jay's death (10/30/02). Maybe we should do a set like this at the next Long Weekend party as well??

I decided to post this just to keep the blog moving. I'll try to post up some music in the next day or two.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/digital-downloads/radiohead-offers-new-album-for-whatever-you-want-to-pay-305566.php

Radiohead dropped a bomb on the music industry last night, announcing their new album In Rainbows. What's the big deal? Well, first of all, it'll be released in a mere 9 days, catching everyone off guard (it was expected sometime next year) and keeping the tracks from leaking to the web. Secondly, you'll be able to download the album from their official site for any price you want to pay. Yes, it's pay what you want, including free. Really.

If you want a physical copy, you'll need to drop a whopping $82 on the "discbox," which includes both CD and vinyl versions of the album, plus an additional CD/vinyl of more new songs, with the CD also including digital pictures and other such goodies. It also comes with a big photo/art book. That version also comes with the digital download, as the physical copy won't drop 'til December 3rd (the delay to help prevent leaks, presumably).

What Radiohead is essentially doing is making piracy useless for their album. It won't leak, so you can't get it early by pirating. And, assuming they'll be selling high-quality MP3s as they do with all their other albums, there's no reason to avoid DRM by pirating. And, since it's essentially free if that's what you think it's worth, you won't save any money by pirating. By making this the best way to get the album, chances are good that people will actually, you know, pay for it, even though they don't have to. And since this is OMG Radiohead, you know boatloads of people are going to drop $82 on the collectors-item discbox, which is sure to help them make their ducats.

Oh, did I mention they're doing this without a record label? Yes, that sound you just heard was the music industry collectively crapping its pants.
